Birdwatching in Kenya’s Central Highlands: A Guide
Birdwatching in Kenya’s central highlands starts at the lodge garden and extends to the Aberdare Range. We have recorded dozens of bird species, and Aberdare National Park, one of the three reserves nearby, has recorded more than 250 species, including the Aberdare cisticola, a bird endemic to Kenya.

Quick take:
- Rhino Watch Safari Lodge has recorded plenty of bird species and has a dedicated bird hide
- Our mornings bring mousebirds, starlings and the Red-cheeked Cordon-bleu, with weaver birds nesting in the trees
- Aberdare National Park has recorded more than 250 bird species
- The Aberdare cisticola is endemic to Kenya and described as endangered
- You do not need to be an expert to start. Binoculars and an early morning are enough
Start at the Lodge
Our exclusive safari tents sit in a forest and garden setting, where mornings begin with mousebirds, starlings and the Red-cheeked Cordon-bleu, and weaver birds nest in the acacia trees. Two of our rooms carry bird names: the Weaver Bird’s Nest and the Paradise Flycatcher.

“An absolutely magical experience. Waking up to birdsong, the views of Mt Kenya at sunrise, and the warmth of the staff. We’ve already booked to return.”

We have a wide variety of bird species in the lodge, and you can read more on our bird watching page.
The Aberdare Range
The Aberdare National Park is one of three wildlife reserves near the lodge. The park rises from about 2,000 to about 4,000 metres, with forest, bamboo and moorland, and more than 250 bird species have been recorded there.
One of them, the Aberdare cisticola, is a small bird endemic to Kenya and described as endangered. Its presence is one reason the Aberdares appeal to birdwatchers.
Tips for a First Birding Trip
- Bring binoculars. They make the biggest difference to what you can see
- Go early. Mornings are a good time to look for birds in the lodge
- Keep a list. Noting what you see turns each outing into a record
